Open Systems Research Group
The Open Systems Research Group applies and develops systems thinking and practice to the study of complex, interconnected situations. Our research focuses on the themes of Sustainability and Environment, Social Learning, Applied Technologies, and Information Systems.
A strong conceptual and practical theme running through our activity is what we call 'systemic design'. This might be applied to implementing socio-technical systems, processes of organisational change or environmental decision making. Systemic design is about avoiding unintended consequences and systemic failure.
We use a range of approaches including soft systems methodology, critical systems, scenario analysis, and diagramming. Key concepts include social learning, communities of practice, sustainability indicators and participation.
